When considering vegetation management at a given site, there are several obvious options: spraying, mechanical work or hand work. Small ruminants (goats and sheep) can provide a non-toxic and ecologically friendly method for vegetation management. They are able to work in steep and variable terrain that is otherwise dangerous for people &/or machinery and environmentally sensitive areas.
Benefits include:
-biomass consumption
-very low to no risk of spreading seeds via consumption
-aeration of soil
-increased soil fertility
-increased water holding capacity
Each project site requires a customized grazing plan to reach management goals within the ecological context of the site.
We believe in high-density/short-duration grazing management. This methodology allows the goats to have the greatest impact on targeted vegetation.
The owner/operator of Raine Grazing Services is Olivia Raine. After beginning my agricultural journey on vegetable farms in New York, I moved to Olympia to attend The Evergreen State College to study Agroecology. After working on a sheep farm for several years, I headed south to California to learn how large-scale targeted grazing operations do their work. I started my own small-scale targeted grazing business for several seasons before relocating back to Western Washington. Raine Grazing Services, LLC is in it's second season in WA.
