Plant management and especially targeted plant eradication efforts are annual efforts, and the timing of a project may be partially dependent on the annual life cycle of the targeted plant(s). Utilizing goats for a project will not eradicate the targeted plant in one season, it is a multi-year effort. But utilizing goats and other reduction/eradication methods (hand tools/machinery, spray) can speed up the process.
Goats will consume a wide range of plants including:
-Himalayan Blackberry (Rubus armeniacus)
-English Ivy (Hedera sp.)
-Scotch Broom (Cytisus scoparius)
-Poison Oak (Toxicodendron diversilobum)
-Garlic Mustard (Alliaria petiolata)
-Russian Olive (Elaeagnus angustifolia)
-Morning Glory/Bindweed (Convolvulus arvensis)
-Gorse (Ulex europaeus)
-Common Tansy (Tanacetum vulgare)
-Japanese Knotweed (Polygonum cuspidatum)
-Knapweed (Centaurea sp.)
-Leafy Spurge (Euphorbia virgata)
-Dalmation Toadflax (Linaria dalmatica)
-A variety of thistle species
and more!
The first step for anyone considering goats is to consider what their short and long-term goals are and what plants they would like to target.
